Learn about Mount Usu, Lake Toya's active volcano, and its impact on the surrounding environment

The Toyako Visitor Center and Volcano Science Museum is located south of Lake Toya near the active volcano Mount Usu. The museum's many exhibits revolve around the flora and fauna in the vicinity of the lake and include animal specimens and information on Mount Usu's recent eruptions. An aerial photograph of Lake Toya covers the floor of the Volcano Science Museum and details the lake's best viewpoints.

The visitor center provides guidance on how to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Toya while respecting the local ecosystem. The staff also lead hikes to Mount Konpira and excursions to Nakajima Island in the middle of the lake.

A 15-minute educational video at the Volcano Science Museum annex offers visitors an insight into the impact of Mount Usu's eruptions on both the natural environment and human-made infrastructure. The video provides a safety briefing on the measures to take during a volcanic event. Visitors can watch the video in four different languages. Other exhibits include a vibrating installation where you can experience what an eruption of Mount Usu might feel like. There is a small park behind the museum where you can see monuments of structures that were destroyed by an eruption in 2000.
