Mount Iizuna Trail

Hike to the summit of the sacred Mount Iizuna and visit nearby ponds and marshes

Mount Iizuna is an ancient site of mountain worship; traces of that history still survive to this day. The trailhead is marked by a torii gate and guardian statues, and the trail is dotted with stone Buddhas. The summit, standing at 1,917 meters, offers stunning views of Nagano. After descending the slopes, take a break at the flower-clad Oyachi Marsh or the serene Daizahoshiike Pond. You can also opt to soak in one of the nearby day-use hot springs in the foothills of Mount Iizuna. (Note: There are no flush toilets on this trail. There is a toilet booth near the summit, but you will need your own disposable toilet bag.)

Enjoy panoramic views from Mount Iizuna's summit

Mount Iizuna overlooks the plains of Zenkojidaira. On clear days, you may even be able to spot Mount Fuji and the Northern Japanese Alps in the distance. The summit on the south peak houses a shrine dedicated to mountain deities and is open to visitors. Avid hikers can also choose to continue from the summit of Mount Iizuna to Mount Reisenji and Mount Meno.

Oyachi Marsh

Oyashi Marsh is a serene wetland that sits under the shadow of Mount Iizuna. In spring, it is covered in blooming fields of Asian skunk cabbage, marsh-marigold, and nirinso (Anemone flaccida). The area is also easily accessible by car. It takes about 30 minutes to walk across the wooden walkway that lines the marsh.

Daizahoshiike Pond

Daizahoshiike Pond is said to be the footprint of Daidarabotchi, a mythological giant. It offers beautiful views of Mount Iizuna and the surrounding forests and is an excellent spot for camping, boat rides and other recreational activities. There are also two beginner-friendly walking trails in the area (3 kilometers and 7 kilometers long).
