Visit sites of historical and religious importance in an area with many onsen
This course takes you on the road around one of Japan's largest hot spring areas. The route roughly follows the foothills on the south side of Mount Kirishima. You'll have a chance to visit several onsen, Yunotaki Falls and Kirishima-jingu Shrine. This tour also visits the ruins of the former Kirishima-jingu Shrine. The ruins are close to the setting of one of Japan's most important origin myths.
The tour starts at Kirishima Spa Village, situated on the southwest side of the mountain. This village is home to many onsen, ranging from the many hot spring inns of the Maruo Onsen area to smaller family-run bathhouses tucked away in the mountains. The spring water comes mostly from a sulfurous hot spring, but many different types of bathing experiences are available. While some baths have milky-white waters that smell strongly of sulfur, others have clear waters with a milder fragrance.
After visiting Kirishima-jingu Shrine Furumiya Ato, ruins of the former Kirishima-jingu Shrine, head to Takachiho Farm and enjoy a view of the Kirishima mountain range. Before heading to Shinwa-no-Sato Park, visit the current site of the Kirishima-jingu Shrine. The shrine's deep red beams contrast sharply with the surrounding greenery.
