Akajima and Gerumajima Islands Scenic Walk

A scenic walk between the islands of Akajima and Gerumajima

On this walking course, you'll have the opportunity visit two of Keramashoto National Park's beautiful islands and cross a bridge over the ocean. The walking trail begins near Aka Port and heads north to Nishibama Beach and nearby Nishibama Observatory. Farther along, the trail crosses over Aka Ohashi Bridge to Gerumajima Island, where you can stop by the historical Takara Residence near the island's southern coast. Enjoy scenic views of the surrounding ocean and landscape along the way.

Akajima Island's Nishibama Beach boasts long stretches of white sand bordering translucent blue seas. The Nishibama Terrace offers a place to lay back and relax as you survey the Kerama Islands dotting the surrounding waters.

Aka Ohashi Bridge

Sightseeing along the walk across Aka Ohashi Bridge

Aka Ohashi Bridge is 530 meters long and connects the islands of Akajima and Gerumajima. The bridge is the perfect vantage point for surveying the unique rock formations of Sakubaru to the west and Tokashikijima Island to the east. The crystal-clear waters under Aka Ohashi Bridge are home to local sea turtles, so look out for them as you cross.

The Takara Residence

A traditional residence from a bygone era

The Takara Residence on Gerumajima Island was built in the latter half of the 19th century when Okinawa was still a part of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429 to 1879). The original red roof tiles and coral stone walls of the residence represent the traditional architectural styles of Okinawa's islands, and the building is designated an Important Cultural Property. Take a stroll around the unpaved alleys and winding pathways around the Takara Residence and enjoy the slow pace of island life.
