Mount Kamiyama and Mount Komagatake Trail

Venture to the volcanic peaks of Mount Kamiyama and Mount Komagatake for beautiful panoramic views of the Hakone area

The trail starts at Owakudani Station on the Hakone Ropeway. Trek to the peak of the 1,438-meter Mount Kamiyama, the highest point in Hakone, then head further on to Mount Komagatake for beautiful views of Lake Ashinoko, Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji. You can spot traces of volcanic activity and a variety of plants throughout the hike. Descend via the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway, which takes you to Hakone-en Station. Note that parts of the hike can be rocky or slippery; proper hiking gear is a must.

Himeiwakagami flowers

Himeiwakagami (Schizocodon ilicifolius) is a type of alpine flora that grows on rocky terrain. A rare mutation of the species (Schizocodon ilicifolius Maxim. var. australis) produces small pink flowers and grows in clusters around the hiking trail between May and June.

Mototsumiya Shrine and views of Lake Ashinoko

Mototsumiya Shrine sits at the summit of the 1,356-meter Mount Komagatake. It is associated with Hakone Shrine at the base of the mountain and is dedicated to nearby Mount Kamiyama, a site of ancient mountain worship. Mount Komagatake's peak offers spectacular views of Lake Ashinoko, Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji.

Mount Komagatake offers unparalleled views of iconic Mount Fuji. The mountain looks particularly dramatic when silhouetted against the evening sun.
