Stay overnight in an outdoor hot spring hotel high up in the mountains
More than halfway up Mt. Tokachidake—an active volcano in the Daisetsuzan National Park —lies a cluster of four hot spring ryokan hotels. A true escape into nature, take a dip in one of the mineral rich pools and enjoy a front-seat view of stunning scenery. You may even be joined by a few members of the local wildlife.

How to Get There
Due to their remote locations, the hot springs of this area are best accessed by car. For guests staying overnight in the area, some onsen hotels may offer a shuttle service.
For those without private transportation, the area can be reached by a 40-minute bus ride from the Kamifurano Station on JR Hokkaido's Furano Line. However, be aware that the bus service is limited.
Bathe in the secluded pools of Fukiage Onsen
Head to the Fukiage Onsen for a memorable bathing experience. With only a simple parking lot as their marker, a path through the woods leads to these secluded pools. While these hot springs are free to use at any time of the day or year, they are unmanaged. This means that the water temperature is unregulated, bathing is mixed-gender, and there are no changing rooms. As a result, unlike most other onsen, the use of a bathing suit is permitted.

It is possible to trek deep into the national park, but you must be prepared. The terrain is rough and the area volcanically active. If you are fully equipped, head out and enjoy the wilds of Japan. The area has plenty of fascinating flora and fauna to discover.
