Getting around the island
Car or taxi is the best way to explore Miyako's other sights such as the botanical garden and neighboring three islands which are connected by bridge; public transportation here runs infrequently.
If you take a taxi anywhere, make sure to make a note of the company's number to arrange the return journey. If you can't speak Japanese, ask for help at a nearby shop or restaurant.
Several outlets in the island's town center also offer scooter and bicycle rental. Note that you will need a valid international driving license to hire a scooter in Miyako and anywhere else in Japan.
