A spectacular festival of color, light and artistic fireworks
Fireworks have a long history in Japan and are an integral part of the summer Obon holiday period in mid-August. Obihiro's Kachimai Fireworks Display on August 13 is one of Japan's biggest, with around 20,000 fireworks, synchronized to music. Held around a bend in the river, the Kachimai display is known for its breathtaking artistic show, combining fireworks, structures, music, and lights, in harmony with the landscape.
How to Get There
The Kachimai Fireworks Display is held along the Tokachi riverside, not far from Keihoku Park. It is accessible on foot from Obihiro Station. The riverside is a 20-minute walk from Obihiro Station.
Opening the local Obon festivities
The Kachimai Fireworks Festival is a precursor event for the Obihiro Heigen Matsuri, a lively festival that takes place in downtown Obihiro from August 14 to 16. The pyrotechnic show starts at 7:30 p.m. August 13, but you should go there early to get a good spot. You can also enjoy local snacks from food stalls along the river.
