With artworks based on the concept of “Cognitive Sculpture” teamLab's new Borderless exhibition features a mixture of art pieces from the Odaiba exhibition, as well as several new pieces in their world without boundaries.

teamLab Borderless is conveniently connected to Kamiyacho Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, or a four-minute walk from Roppongi-Itchome Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line.

Originally located in Odaiba, teamLab Borderless has relocated to Azabudai Hills in Roppongi. Similar to the Odaiba location, the new Azabudai Hills location shares the core concept of “borderless.” Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this borderless art and to wander, explore and discover the different spaces. The art also resonates around this “borderless” theme. The different pieces and spaces communicate, influence and sometimes intermingle with one another, forming an overarching borderless world.

While both locations tie together technology, light and human interaction, the new art featured at the Azabudai Hills location is based on teamLab's recent project Cognitive Sculpture, which explores the notion of perception and how humans see the world by experiencing art. The entrance to the exhibition serves as the first piece of art that visitors encounter, where “teamLab★ Borderless” is written on the walls and ceiling. To the naked eye, the logo seems distorted, warped and unnatural, no matter what angle it's viewed from. However, when looking through a camera from a certain position, the lines and shapes of the logo line up perfectly, illustrating how human perception is vastly different from a camera's mechanisms.

Bubble Universe: Physical Light, Bubbles of Light, Wobbling Light, and Environmental Light - One Stroke, one of the pieces at Azabudai Hills, is filled with spheres that form a convergence of light. Each sphere has a slightly different appearance, and the lights inside play with our perception to create the appearance of soap bubbles or jelly that do not physically exist. When visitors stop and stand near a sphere, the light gets stronger and spreads to the nearest sphere, passing through each one once to create a unique and interactive environment.

Another art experience, found in the Dark Crystal Formation room, uses a number of LED sculptures and mirrors to create a gathering of time and space , yet the space remains interconnected. When visitors enter the room, they are greeted with bright red flowers blooming from every angle. Known as Life is an Ephemeral Light that Blooms in the Dark - Dark Crystal Formation, the flowers grow and bloom when visitors stand still, but once they move away and around the room, the petals scatter and fade away, creating a cycle of growth and decay that repeats endlessly.

In the same space, the flowers fade and the room's ambience shifts to a colder tone as waves and water particles scatter across the room. This piece, known as Black Waves - Born in the Darkness, Return to the Darkness, captures the essence of ocean waves through a combination of expressive lines, which can also be seen in classical East Asian art.

In addition to the above, the new teamLab Borderless features many more pieces based on the theme of Cognitive Sculpture. Keeping in line with the concept of being “borderless,” art from different rooms crosses over and interacts with visitors and pieces in other spaces, creating truly unique artwork in every moment.
