Panoramic views of the Osaka metropolis
The ultramodern Umeda Sky Building is a landmark of Osaka's Kita Ward. It sprouted up at the end of Japan's economic bubble in 1993. Head to the uniquely designed observation deck for a picture-perfect view of the expansive cityscape.
Scared of heights? Try not to look down as you ride the glass escalator to the top. After exploring the observation deck, go to the basement and browse through a market that recreates early 20th-century Japan.
How to Get There
This building is accessible by train.
The Umeda Sky Building is a 7-minute walk from Osaka Station, and is nearest to the Grand Front shopping complex on the station's north side.
Walk along the outdoor promenade of the south hall of the Grand Front complex. The Umeda Sky Building is visible to your left. When you reach the street dividing Grand Front's south and north hall, look for an underground walkway on the left side of the intersection. Go through the walkway, and you will exit adjacent to the Umeda Sky Building.
Built during Japan's economic bubble
The Umeda Sky Building was erected toward the end of Japan's economic boom. The complex was originally conceived as a series of four skyscrapers connected at the top. Designed by renowned architect Hiroshi Hara, the two skyscrapers comprising the Umeda Sky Building were completed in 1993.
The Floating Garden Observatory links the towers, and is the main draw of the complex.
Into the underground
Go to the basement to browse through a shopping center modeled after Japan's Showa period (early 20th century).
