Unzen Nita Pass connects Mt. Myokendake (1,333 m) with Mt. Nodake (1,142 m) on the Shimabara Peninsula in Unzen-Amakusa National Park. The route is popular with hikers because of the way the seasons dramatically change the surrounding landscape; from spring blooms to summer greenery, and autumn colors to hoarfrost-covered slopes of winter. The Unzen Ropeway makes the 1,483-meter peaks of Mt. Unzen accessible to everyone and offers an aerial 360-degree view of the mountainsides. Relax afterward in one of the soothing hot springs at Unzen Onsen, and witness the volcanic landscape of Unzen Jigoku.
