Yamanashi

Mt. Minobu

Mt. Minobu Mt. Minobu

This sacred peak in Yamanashi Prefecture is the location of Kuonji Temple, the head temple of the Nichiren school of Buddhism. The temple is at the base of the mountain, and a 287-step stone staircase leads to a five-tiered red pagoda. The route to its 1,153-meter-high peak winds through lush cedar forests, though there is also a ropeway directly to the summit, from where you can see Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps. Mt. Minobu is especially popular in spring, when visitors flock to see the 400-year-old weeping cherry blossom tree in front of Kuonji Temple’s main building. It is about 15 minutes by cab or bus to Minobusan Ropeway from JR Minobu Station. A visit to Mt. Minobu makes a great day trip from Tokyo.
