A Hot Spring Island Getaway
Shikinejima Island is a volcanic island with striking sunbathing spots and natural hot springs, a three-hour ferry ride from Tokyo. Unlike most hot springs, the mineral-rich water here arises from the ocean floor, creating bubbling pools with sea views. Some of the pools can be extremely hot, so follow signs and use them with caution.
Jinata Hot Spring
There are three prominent open-air hot springs on Shikinejima Island. The cloudy waters of Jinata are rust-colored and rejuvenating. Locals claim its iron-rich water soothes neuralgia pain. The water is scalding hot at low-tide, so wait for higher tides, when the pools are naturally cooled by the ocean water.
Matsugashita Miyabiyu and Ashitsuke Hot Springs
After exploring the area, visit Matsugashita Miyabiyu, right next to the ocean, for its multiple pools and a footbath to soothe tired feet. Nearby, Ashitsuke is a rocky, seaside hot spring. Its crystal-clear water is infused with sodium bicarbonate, which is said to help heal injuries and reduce pain.
Ocean Adventures
Coral and tropical fish populate the warm waters around Shikinejima. The abundant marine life makes it ideal for swimming or snorkeling. Diving companies offer tours for novices, while adventurous travelers can go boat diving or rent a kayak.
How to get there
High-speed ferries from Tokyo Takeshiba Pier take three hours. Large passenger ships also depart at night and take about ten hours.
