Cycle through the pastoral beauty of Azumino, a rural part of Nagano that rests in the shadow of the Japanese Alps. There are plenty of cycle rental stores for those who want to explore the area at their own pace, or all-inclusive guided tours so you can gain an even deeper appreciation of the area’s culture and scenery. One recommended route is only 11 kilometers long, but takes you by some of Azumino's must-visit sights. Cruise through rice fields and rustic farming villages, and reflect on the quiet tranquility of nature at Hotaka Shrine, surrounded by cedar forest. Be sure to stop by the Daio Wasabi Farm to sample some of the region's famous, farm-fresh wasabi, and soak in the international atmosphere of Azumino Swiss Village. The area hosts the Alps Azumino Century Ride, a long-distance cycling event, so the roads are well-maintained.
