Discover the "end of the world" on a vast ice plain
The Notsuke Peninsula is a sandbar that juts out into the Nemuro Strait off mainland Hokkaido. This sand peninsula, which includes the decaying fir forest Todowara, is an otherwordly place—especially in winter when the plain freezes over. With no mountains for perspective, the horizon and the sky become one to give rise to the area's nickname, the "edge of the world."
When to go: January through March
