See rock ptarmigans, revered as "messengers of the gods"

About 280 rock ptarmigans live in the Murodo area of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. In Japanese mythology, the rock ptarmigan was given the moniker the "messenger of the gods" and in more modern times, designated a Special Natural Monument by the government. Visitors to the area can also view a wide variety of alpine flora and beautiful natural scenery throughout the year.

When to go: May through June
