A pilgrimage to the sacred centers of Shugendo
A pilgrimage to the sacred centers of Shugendo
The Shugendo training tours in the two sacred mountains, Mt. Omine and Mt. Inamuragatake, give you the chance to place yourself into a genuine world of Shugendo while offering a different type of experience for each tour. The tour in Mt. Omine will take you deep into the secluded village of Tenkawa, a hidden gem of a hot springs town. The majestic nature of the Tenkawa area captured the reverence of the people, and the area became a sacred place for Shugendo, as founded by En-no Gyoja over 1300 years ago. Women are prohibited from entering Mt.Omine, but Mt.Inamuragatake is known as the ‘Shugendo Mountain for Women’ and both sexes are free to enter. This mountain is certified as an official Shugendo training dojo for women by Ryusenji Temple. Though it’s a three-day tour, what we prepare for you here is not merely a “sightseeing” experience. Taking place in such a holy place for Shugendo practitioners, both tours consist of genuine Shugendo experiences with a Sendachi, a well-experienced Shugendo practitioner. You will not only enter the sacred mountain, but you will also experience an important sequence of Shugendo practices. Discover the essence of Japanese faith in nature!
When to go: May through September
