Experience the world of Shugendo by learning their food traditions
The Dewa Sanzan, the collective name for the three sacred mountains: Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono, is where Shugendo, a form of mountain worship, has been practiced for over a millennium. Here, at a shukubo pilgrim lodge, you can try and learn about shojin ryori—the meals served at Buddhist temples in Japan. By going out into the woods to pick mountain vegetables for yourself and tasting the meal with your eyes blindfolded, you will have a unique and more in-depth experience and can grasp the Zen philosophy. The owner of the lodge, who is Yamabushi—a Shugendo follower—will tell you the details of the meal and about Yamabushi's pursuit of rebirth.
When to go: All year
