Rare and endangered Okinawan birds in a subtropical forest
The Yambaru area on the northern tip of Okinawa Island, home to Yambaru National Park, is rich in wildlife. With a diverse environment of mountains, subtropical forests, mangrove forests and beaches, the area is home to several endangered bird species, including the elusive Okinawa rail, an almost flightless bird. The area has evergreen woodlands with easy hiking trails and mangrove forests to explore by canoe, as well as small villages such as Ogimi Village, famous for the long lifespan of its friendly residents.
