Kitayama in northern Wakayama is the only place in Japan where you can experience traditional log rafting.

More than just an exciting activity, logging has been a major industry in the mountains of the Kii peninsula for centuries. Its origin is in the transportation of lumber; before roads were built, logs from felled trees were tied together as rafts and floated down the river. The skills and techniques of these logging river runners has been preserved in the Kitayama Village for over 600 years.

Now log rafts are used to transport thrill seekers through the scenic Dorokyo Gorge, which is part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park. With clear streams and fast rapids, riding along Kitayama River is exhilarating. Feel the soul-stirring paddling of the drivers as you go down the swift currents of the Kitayama River standing on a log raft, and don't forget to bring a change of clothes!

Log rafts are strictly checked for safety standards, while guests are required to wear life jackets at all times.

How to get there

From JR Nagoya Station, take the train to JR Kumanoshi Station (about 3 hours), then ride the Kitayama Village Bus to ""Okutoro Koen""(about 1 hour).
There are only two buses (9:10, 16:35) each day and tourists should take the 9:10 bus if they want to join rafting the same day.
