Single- and Multi-day Ceramic Workshops in Hagi

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Single- and Multi-day Ceramic Workshops in Hagi

Learn about the history and techniques of Hagiyaki pottery while making your own project under the supervision of a master artisan

The Inland Sea, SETOUCHI Tourism Authority

Established in 1979, the Choungama family has been dedicated to creating beautiful and functional ceramics for generations. Our workshop and exhibition hall are located in the mountains of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Inspired by the colors and textures of our surroundings, we specialize in traditional Hagiyaki (Hagi ware) with our own unique twist. Traditional Hagi pottery is typically a translucent beige color, but in 1989, we created our own glaze with a clear blue color, which we named Aohagi (literally “blue Hagi”). It has been our signature at Choungama ever since.

Experience making traditional Hagiyaki at our workshop, where you will not only learn techniques such as recycling clay with fire, wedging, using the potter's wheel, trimming, and working on a teapot project, but also gain insights into the history of Hagiyaki. Participants also have the opportunity to enjoy traditional Japanese tea with our handcrafted teaware.

We offer workshops for all skill levels, available in 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day sessions. The 3-day and 5-day workshops provide a more in-depth experience, allowing participants to explore additional techniques and projects. In the 5-day workshop, you'll take on a fun and rewarding challenge—creating a teapot—while receiving guidance and support every step of the way.
