Get a taste of Japanese tradition and experience its history
Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture
Naniwa Sake Brewery in Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture is one of the oldest sake breweries in Osaka, having been in business since 1716 in Japan’s Edo period (1603-1867). The city of Hannan in Osaka Prefecture is bordered by the Izumi Mountains, and while most of Japan has soft water, the clear and crisp underground water from these mountains is medium-hard, which makes it easy for bacteria to ferment, thus serving as an ideal location for sake brewing.
At Naniwa Sake Brewery, the brewing method which uses this underground water has been passed down over the course of the brewery’s history. Even in an age when machines and computer-based management has become the mainstream for sake brewing, the brewery remains committed to manually overseeing the rice, water, temperature, and humidity. As a result, Naniwa Sake Brewery has received numerous awards for its sake.
In the Sake Brewing Tour and Sake Tasting Experience, visitors will tour the brewery and learn about the history and production process of sake brewing, followed by a sake tasting experience. In addition, the building itself is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, and visitors can immerse themselves in the mood of that time while sitting in a tatami room, gazing out at the Japanese garden in a residence located on the same site as the brewery.
