Travel hiking trails dating back to the Heian period
Nachi-Katsuura Tourism Organization
Daimonzaka is part of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route, which, along with Oku-no-Hosomichi (Tohoku-Chubu) and Nakasendo (Shinshu-Chubu), is one of Japan’s three major ancient roads. The old-world atmosphere still lingers on this evocative path, and as you climb up the cobbled stone steps, you can almost hear the whispers of the ancient pilgrims. At the entrance of Daimonzaka, two 800-year-old giant trees called Meoto Sugi (Husband and Wife Cedars) welcome you. These are sacred cedars, and you can truly feel the powerful energy surrounding them. Kumano Kodo is a World Heritages Site, and a hike up the easy-to-walk path of Daimonzaka is the best way to discover all its charm. You can also try on Heian costumes at the Daimonzaka Tea House, located halfway up Daimonzaka Hill.
