Learn about Japanese culture on a tour of two historical lodgings

As designated national Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan, two traditional inns nestled in the mountainous region of central Izu in Shizuoka Prefecture offer guests lodgings in buildings steeped in history and culture.

Arai Ryokan in Shuzenji Hot Springs and Ochiairo in Amagi-Yugashima Hot Springs, both established in the late 19th century, combine modern amenities with traditional-style stays. Renovated and added to over time, their mix of architecture from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras (1868-1989) offer visitors unique opportunities to explore and view some of Japan’s time-honored building and carpentry techniques.
Featuring tatami mat rooms, period furniture, traditional interiors, and onsen hot spring baths, the two inns reflect characteristics of the eras in which they were built. More than just a place to rest, each offers a complete cultural experience.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Mishima Station (approx. 60 mins), then take the Izuhakone Railway to Shuzenji Station (approx. 35 mins).
