Stay in a renovated traditional house in Tokushima Prefecture surrounded by a preserved townscape from the Edo Period
The Inland Sea SETOUCHI Tourism Authority
The Moriguchi House, a private house built in 1881 in the historical townscape of Mima City, has been renovated into Paysage Moriguchi, a boutique hotel with only 5 rooms. Paysage means "landscape" in French, and this hotel allows visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture and landscape.
Known as the “udatsu townscape,” this area has been designated a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District. The name comes from the udatsu fire walls that are attached to the roofs of the houses, as in this area highly decorated fire walls were built to show off the merchants’ prosperity.
This was once a major center for indigo dyeing and thus home to many wealthy merchants, who built the elegant wooden houses with tiled roofs and storehouses which still line the streets.
At Paysage Moriguchi, each room brings together natural materials and traditional craftsmanship, such as beams and lattices, with modern touches of design that ensure a peaceful, restful stay. The location is surrounded by nature and far from the bustle and bustle of major cities, so you can enjoy exploring the sights of the season and strolling through a townscape unchanged since the Edo Period (1603-1868).
