Unique and wonderful rock formations and a lavishly decorated shrine amid the serenity of nature

An otherworldly landscape of rugged spikes, Mt. Myogi’s unusually craggy rock formations are the result of millions of years of erosion of what was once a volcano.

Known as one of Japan’s most unique rock formations, the mountain’s bizarre spires and sculptural rocks become even more fantastical in autumn, when yellow and red foliage creep up their sides in a burst of color. A popular hiking destination, its seven peaks offer breathtaking panoramic views of Gunma Prefecture’s mountainous landscape and numerous trails from beginner friendly routes to sharp inclines for experienced climbers.

For a gentler experience, begin at the hilltop Myogi Shrine, an Important Cultural Property that was established in 537 on a revered spiritual spot featuring 500-year-old cedar trees. An ornate group of black lacquered structures, embellished with carvings colored in gold, red and green, the shrine’s decor was crafted by artisans known for their work on Nikko's Toshogu Shrine.

Other attractions close to the shrine include Momiji no Yu, an open-air hot spring bath, ideal for a relaxing dip after a long trek, and the Myogi Visitor Center that opened in August 2023 on the 100th anniversary of Mt. Myogi’s designation as a national scenic spot. For something different and further afield, take a 30-minute taxi ride to the Tomioka Silk Mill, a Meiji era (1868-1912) textile factory and World Heritage Site.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki Station (about 50 minutes), and then switch to the JR Shin-etsu Line to Matsuida Station (about 25 minutes) or take the Joshin Dentetsu Line to Joshu Tomioka Station (about 40 minutes).
