Glide through the virgin forests in the Nikko backcountry, enjoying the snow-covered landscapes and peace of nature in winter
Nikko City Tourism Association
While Oku Nikko is an easy day trip from Tokyo, it feels a million miles away from the busy city. Nikko’s backcountry offers high-quality powder snow and peaceful cross-country skiing trails.
As your guide takes you through the deep, snow-blanketed forest, see if you can spot the footprints of wild animals such as deer, rabbits, squirrels, and foxes. You might even be lucky enough to spot one of the four-footed inhabitants. Stop for a break and feel the crisp breeze while listening to the sounds of nature.
For this backcountry cross-country skiing adventure, you will don skis that are slightly wider than normal, with a bottom that is also structured for walking. The boots are light and flexible, with plenty of ankle support.
The guide will ensure that you quickly pick up the knack of using the skis. The tour lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, covering a relatively flat area, so both beginners and experienced skiers are welcome.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Utsunomiya Station (around 50 minutes). Switch to the Nikko Line and ride to Nikko Station (about 45 minutes). From there, take the Tobu Bus to the Yasukawacho bus stop (about 10 minutes). A 5-minute walk will take you to the meeting spot.
