Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture
In the Izumo region of Shimane, the 10th month of the lunar calendar is called kami-ari-zuki, The Month of the Gods. Only this part of Japan can call this time of year this name, as it is said gods from all over the country come to Izumo Taisha Shrine to discuss the destiny of all living beings, including marriage, fertility, and health. On the night of the 10th day of the 10th month of the old lunar calendar (typically falling in November), a ritual is held to welcome gods from across Japan.
For an insight into the myths and legends surrounding kami-ari-zuki, watch Child of Kamiari Month (2021). This anime movie is about a young girl passionate about racing who, after losing her mother, falls into despair and loses her motivation to run. With the help of a rabbit sent by the gods, she finds the confidence to run again and they go together on a journey to Izumo City, where all the gods are gathering for the kami-ari-zuki.
Near Izumo Taisha Shrine is Inasa Beach, known as a spiritual power spot and one of the best beaches in Japan. It is also the setting for kuni-yuzuri, the “transfer of the land” mythological event in Japanese prehistory, relating the story of how the rulership of Japan passed from the earthly kami gods to the kami gods of heaven and their eventual descendants, the Imperial House of Japan.
Boost your positive energy and ask the gods for good fortune with a visit to Izumo.
