Sustainable Accomodation in a Historic Residence on Awaji Island

A feng shui-informed haven for traditional culture

Shunyoso is a historic country retreat on beautiful Awaji Island. Built in 1941 by shipbuilding magnate Hideo Iwaki, the 1,400-square-meter property was both residence and head office for the family business. The entire complex was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2004, and in 2016. some buildings were repaired for conservation purposes. Currently it is a luxurious but sustainable place to stay that also promotes the island’s traditional culture.

Shunyoso has eight buildings in all, arranged according to the philosophy of feng shui, and the entire complex was registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2004. The Western-style building in the southwest corner, formerly the administrative office of the shipbuilding company, has been fully renovated into a VIP Guest Wing and can host up to four adults overnight. You can also book the entire property for a more luxurious, private stay.

The Japanese-style main hall at the center of the property now serves as a venue for cultural experiences, including Awaji Ningyo-Joruri puppet show, kimono photo sessions, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and more. Meditation sessions are available in the mornings, and Shunyoso also offers a tour of the property for those seeking to learn more about the craftsmanship that went into its construction and its sustainable practices.

Access: Take the local train from Shin-Osaka Station to Sannomiya Station (about 30 minutes). Take the bus to Sumoto Bus Terminal (about 90　minutes), and arrange a courtesy car to the hotel.

Contribution to Sustainability

At Shunyoso Historic Country Retreat uses rainwater, a biomass boiler for heating and hot water, upcycled furniture, recycled rooftiles for gardening, and other sustainable resources. The retreat also contributes to the community by hiring local staff and sourcing ingredients locally. In addition, a portion of proceeds from tourists are contributed to the conservation of cultural heritage and the development of the local economy.
