The seaside town of Shiraoi is home to Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park, a national center dedicated to the history and culture of Hokkaido’s indigenous Ainu people.

The National Ainu Museum, located within Upopoy, is Japan's northernmost national museum and the first one dedicated to Ainu culture.
