Encounter a Magnificent Primeval Beech Forest in Tohoku
Explore this natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Aomori, northern Japan
You’ll feel both miles and millennia away from modern Japan on a trek through the primeval beech forests of Shirakami, Aomori Prefecture. The forest traces its literal roots back 8,000 years and remains home to species of animals as diverse as the Asian black bear and the rare black woodpecker. Standing in the emerald glades of Shirakami, it’s not hard to see why this magnificent scenery has enchanted and inspired so many people through the years.
A variety of activities are available in the area through all the seasons, from hiking, climbing, and boating in the snow-free months to snowshoeing in winter. These are all great ways to experience the remarkable natural beauty of Shirakami first hand.
Access: By air, fly from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Aomori Airport (about one hour 20 minutes). From the airport, take the Airport Bus to Hirosaki Bus Terminal (about 55 minutes), then take a taxi to the Nishimeya/Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center (about 40 minutes). By train, take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Aomori Station (about three hours 10 minutes), then transfer to the Ou Line for JR Hirosaki Station (about 50 minutes), take a bus to the Tashiro stop (about 55 minutes), then walk (about six minutes) to the Nishimeya/Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Center.
