A Thrilling Hiking Pilgrimage to a Hazardous National Treasure

Panoramic vistas and steep climbs await at sacred and scenic Mt. Mitoku

The arduous path up Mt. Mitoku―a sacred mountain situated in the eastern end of Daisen-Oki National Park―has been said to mirror the Buddha’s own journey to enlightenment. Begin the hike and you’ll soon see why, as you cling to the mighty roots of primeval trees to scale steep and slippery rock surfaces.

You’ll be rewarded for your efforts with up-close looks at ancient temples and breathtaking views of the mountainside along the way. It all culminates with your arrival at the Nageiredo—a striking, designated National Treasure set in a sheer cliff face, and whose origins are shrouded in mystery.

When you return from the roughly 90-minute journey, you’ll truly feel as if you’ve traveled into a separate realm.

Access: Fly from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport (about one hour 15 minutes). Take the Tottori Airport Limousine Bus to Kurayoshi Station (about 50 minutes), then transfer to the Hinomaru Bus for Mitoku stop (about 40 minutes) and walk about six minutes to the temple.

Contribution to Sustainability

Nageiredo has been here over a thousand years and it was designated as a National Treasure. Money offered to the temple is used for maintenance and repairing the auditorium and it helps to preserve National Treasures and cultural properties.
